SABA Freiburg Model Comparison (1961-1966)

The SABA Freiburg radio history starts in 1950/51 with the introduction of the SABA Freiburg W. The Freiburg model is the top-of-the-line luxury German radio with superior construction, electronics and sound reproduction.  During the 15 years it was produced, new and innovative features were added to enhance the functionality and sound quality. They included more robust electronics, additional speakers, motorized tuning, wired remote control and Stereo multiplex adapter.

These 15 years produced 32 different Freiburg models with the noteworthy models including the Freiburg: 6-3D, 9, 11, 400, 14, 410US,15M, and FR18.  The 400 and 410US are export versions.

A Little-Known Fact:

By the time the Freiburg 15M was introduced in 1964/65, there was a precipitous drop in the demand for tube-based chassis radios in favor of transistor-based chassis radios. Sales for the Freiburg 15M flatlined. By the end of 1965, SABA had a large inventory of completed Freiburg 15M, surplus chassis, cabinet, etc. They decided to change the model number to a Freiburg FR18 in an attempt sell this “obsolete” stock (Note: Look at the back panel of a Freiburg FR18 and you will see they used the stock of 15M back panel and obscured the 15M model designation with a long label with the model FR18 designation).  The Freiburg FR18 had passed its days before it was launched and few of them were sold.

The Unthinkable Demise of the Freiburg 15M and FR18:

If you look at the following comparison table below, you will find the Freiburg 15M and FR18 are much rarer than earlier models.  Why is that the case?

SABA made the decision in 1966 to write-down the value of the large inventory of remaining Freiburg 15M and FR18.  The remaining stock of completed radios and parts were subsequently destroyed.
